Climate Change Loss and Damage within the Framework of Climate Justice

"The Loss and Damage" Decision

Negotiations around Climate Change by the UN body,  United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC) had focus lying in tackling irreversible climate change impacts, encompassing economic, social, and cultural damages. The objective is to promote equitable support and fair compensation for communities vulnerable to the effects of climate change.

Context and Rationale

Climate change poses an urgent global challenge, resulting from human activities and impacting vulnerable populations disproportionately. The accumulation of greenhouse gases in the atmosphere intensifies the greenhouse effect, leading to rising global temperatures and a wide range of adverse consequences. Urgent and ambitious measures are imperative to mitigate greenhouse gas emissions, while simultaneously addressing historical and existing injustices.

Loss and Damage Decision History

The concept, initially adopted during the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC) Conference of the Parties (COP) in Warsaw, Poland, in 2013, has been subsequently developed and expanded upon in successive COP meetings, with particular emphasis on advancing the principles of climate justice.

African Union's Position on Climate Change

The initiative acknowledges the imperative of taking immediate and ambitious measures to tackle the impacts of climate change and advance climate justice specifically in Africa. It actively advocates for the Loss and Damage decision and endeavors to safeguard the interests of African nations in international climate negotiations.

Popularizing COP 27 Outcomes in Kenya, Uganda, and Somalia

It is crucial to generate awareness about the Loss and Damage decision and climate change action, particularly within the framework of climate justice. By engaging both the public and policymakers, we can foster increased support and action to address climate change while tackling the existing inequalities. Our efforts aim to ensure that vulnerable communities are not overlooked or marginalized in the collective fight against climate change.

Gender and Climate Change in relation to COP 27 Outcomes

Recognizing the importance of addressing climate injustice, it is essential to adopt a gender-sensitive approach that prioritizes the inclusion of women’s voices and perspectives in climate change communication efforts, shedding light on gender-related injustices. We are dedicated to promoting climate change awareness in Kenya, Uganda, and Somalia through education, outreach programs, and policy development, with a specific focus on achieving gender equity and empowering women in the face of climate challenges.

Climate Justice and Empowerment

A collective effort involving all stakeholders is essential to address climate change inequalities and empower vulnerable populations. Through collaboration, our aim is to promote climate change awareness, foster gender equity, and drive sustainable development in East Africa. These concerted efforts will result in more effective climate action, ensuring that the needs of the most vulnerable communities are taken into account and prioritized.

Call to Action for Policy Actors in Africa

There is a pressing call for policy actors in Africa to actively participate in and implement the African Union’s stance on climate change. It is imperative to advocate for and provide support to the Loss and Damage decision and other climate justice-related initiatives in both regional and global forums. Moreover, it is crucial to develop national policies and strategies that integrate climate justice principles and effectively address the needs of vulnerable populations, including women and marginalized groups.
